![]() What’s your favorite story about the gear? The replacement pickup by Wizard Pickups is made specifically for these basses, and it makes this bass sound absolutely amazing. I obtained a new pickguard from a seller on eBay, the pickup is a custom handmade replacement made by Wizard Pickups in the UK, and the all-new electronics are two CTS 250k pots, a Switchcraft jack, vintage style cloth wire and a Sprague orange drop capacitor. It was given to me by a friend who ran a studio in Orlando, Florida. Guitar technician and custom instrument builder Graham Drew shares his 1978 Fender Musicmaster Bass in this installment of Old School, and the story that goes with it. Squier reintroduced the Musicmaster briefly in 1997, replacing it a year later with the Bronco bass. Fender later offered many of the finishes offered on their other instruments as well.įender’s line of budget instruments was discontinued in 1981, when the company introduced the Squier brand. The bass was introduced with three finishes: black, white and red, with a few early issues painted in daphne blue and sporting pearl pickguards. This was also a 30″ short-scale bass, the shortest production scale of any Fender bass. All of the electronics were mounted on a single piece of plastic. The bodies were from the Mustang production line, and 6-pole guitar pickups were used instead of the standard 4-pole pickups used in basses. Local pickup in LA is also welcome at no cost. The Musicmaster was Fender’s budget-priced bass at the time, made from surplus parts from other Fender models. It'll be professionally packed, insured and shipped to US continental only (Send me a message with your zip code and we'll find the most cost effective options). This does NOT affect anything as far as functionality and at this point not really worth to try to remove it without compromising the original finish. In fact, it really looks cool and add some "modjo", but i have to disclose it. One thing to mention is that for some reason the previous owner at some point (i guess unintentionally?) let the bass exposed to some "home renovation environment" and as you might see at some photos there's some white paint spray overall the instrument that you can only notice it from a short distance and as you clearly see, not noticeable from far distance. Original Hard case in very good condition with all latches working. ![]() ![]() Original 3ply black pickguard with original electronics. Unlike many other Fenders from this era, the maple neck with rosewood fretboard is perfectly straight with fully working truss rod and minimal fret wear with no issues whatsoever. Although functionally everything works great. The original black finish shows some wear, buckle rush and some scratches on the back due to decades of usage. It’s interesting how thicker and fuller sound you can get with these short scale basses, cutting through the mixes like no other. Same with Fender Mustangs, Musicmasters were originally marketed as “student” or entry level instruments, but throughout the decades were proven to beat many P-Basses. As commonly on these years the serial shows S8xxxxx and dates '78 on the pots, although assembly date on the pocket and the pickup shows '81.
